WHY SUPPORT THE GGIA?

The State of Georgia is in a state of crisis caused by criminal street gangs. In our most recent statewide survey of gang activity, responding agencies reported that there are over 1,500 criminal street gangs with over 71,000 members currently active in Georgia. That’s nearly three times the number of law enforcement officers in the state. And an average of 60% of violent crimes committed statewide are gang-motivated.

The Georgia Gang Investigators Association was created to stand against this trend. Our mission is to counter criminal street gang activity in Georgia by providing intelligence, training, suppression, and intervention to law enforcement and prosecutors. But we can’t do this without your support.

The GGIA is the only statewide organizing body of gang investigators in Georgia. We provide the vast majority of gang-related training across the state, including classes for students, community groups, religious and civic organizations, and conferences/workshops. And we offer all of our Gang Awareness and Identification courses free of charge!

We also serve by speaking about gang-related issues before the state legislature on behalf of our members and the communities they serve. We are the front line against criminal street gangs in Georgia – and we need your support.

Gang crime isn’t just an issue for law enforcement – it affects communities and businesses across the state. In our recent survey, 157 of 159 counties in Georgia reported having gang members living in their county. More importantly, 155 of 159 counties reported having active gang members or associates in their schools.

This is what our state legislature has said about criminal gangs in Georgia:
(from O.C.G.A. 16-15-2 “Legislative Findings and Intent”)

“The General Assembly finds and declares that it is the right of every person to be secure and protected from fear, intimidation, and physical harm caused by the activities of violent groups and individuals.”

“The General Assembly… further finds that the State of Georgia is in a state of crisis which has been caused by violent criminal street gangs whose members threaten, terrorize, and commit a multitude of crimes against the peaceful citizens of their neighborhoods. These activities… present a clear and present danger to public order and safety.”

“It is the intent of the General Assembly… to seek the eradication of criminal activity by criminal street gangs by focusing upon criminal gang activity and upon the organized nature of criminal street gangs which together are the chief source of terror created by criminal street gangs.”

The GGIA stands in support of this vision – support us in the fight to eradicate criminal gang activity in Georgia.
